Last night the Fighting Illini had their first Big 10 conference game and Kofi Cockburn scored a career-high 33 points as number-13 Illinois handled Minnesota 92-65 in Champaign. Ayo Dosunmu tallied 10 points and seven rebounds for the Illini, who improved to 5-and-2 and will travel Sunday to take on Rutgers.
DJ Horne had 22 points as Illinois State routed Chicago State 91-62 at the Redbird Arena. Next for ISU will be the Loyola Ramblers.
Tonight the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame will host the Duke Blue Devils in South Bend Indiana.
The Stanford women’s basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer captured her 1,099th win to pass the late Pat Summitt for winningest coach all time in women’s college basketball. The top-ranked Cardinal defeated Pacific 104-61 to claim the record-setting victory.

Michigan and 16th-ranked Iowa won’t be playing in Iowa City on Saturday. Michigan called off the game as they continued to battle a COVID-19 outbreak within the program. The Wolverines had canceled their rivalry game against Ohio State last week. Michigan ends the season 2-and-4. Iowa will either look for another opponent or wait until it receives a bowl invite.
Speaking of bowls, The Frisco Bowl is being canceled due to COVID-19 within the SMU football program. It was scheduled to be the first bowl game of the season, slated for this Saturday between SMU and Texas-San Antonio. UTSA announced it will now play in the First Responders Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas on December 26th.
Indiana and Purdue will not play for the Old Oaken Bucket this season. The Friday game has been canceled because of COVID-19 concerns at both schools. The last time the in-state rivalry game was not played was in 1919 during the influenza pandemic.
The Bulls visit the Thunder tonight in preseason action. Chicago is 1-and-1 so far in exhibition play. The Bulls open the regular season a week from today at home against the Atlanta Hawks.
Major League Baseball and the Players Association are at odds over when to start the 2021 season. One American League owner says he doesn’t see any way that spring training can begin in February. The owners want the season to be delayed until May so players can be vaccinated but the players are pushing to start on time and play a full 162-game schedule with full pay.
