The Illinois High School Association announced Monday it plans to meet with state officials sometime before January 1st to discuss the timeline for the return of the winter sports season.
In their statement, IHSA executive director Craig Anderson said they intend to play every sport for the rest of the 20-21 school year and are hopeful to keep boys and girls basketball in the winter.
The IHSA did announce one schedule change, moving girls badminton, a low-risk sport, from the spring season to winter. The remaining low-risk sports for the winter are bowling, boys swimming, cheerleading, competitive dance and girls gymnastics.
After meeting with state officials, the IHSA will hold a special meeting to finalize schedules for winter, spring and summer seasons.
13th-ranked Illinois opens the Big Ten season at home tonight against undefeated Minnesota. The 4-and-2 Illini fell to Missouri this past Saturday. The Gophers are 6-and-0.
The ISU Redbirds will host Chicago State tonight at the Redbird Arena. Illinois State is 2-3 on the season.
It was a wild game on Monday Night Football last night. Justin Tucker kicked a 55-yard, go-ahead field goal in the closing seconds and the Ravens added a safety in the end to beat the Browns 47-42 in Cleveland. Lamar Jackson finished with 163 passing yards and a touchdown, to go with 124 yards and two TD’s on the ground as Baltimore moved to 8-and-5. Baker Mayfield threw for 343 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Browns who fell to 9-and-4.
25-year-old South Korean A Lim Kim won the U.S. Women’s Open in Houston Texas. Kim birdied her last three holes and tied the record for the largest comeback win in the biggest event in women’s golf. A Lim Kim is one of nine South Korean winners in the last 13 years at the U.S Women’s Open.
Family and friends are mourning the passing of pioneering Chicago sports broadcaster and journalist Jeannie Morris. The California native died yesterday at the age of 85 following a battle with cancer. The former wife of Bears star receiver Johnny Morris started writing about football in the late 60s for the Chicago American newspaper and later for the Chicago Daily News. She became one of America’s first woman sportscasters when she joined Johnny at WMAQ Channel 5 in Chicago in 1970. They both moved to WBBM Channel 2 in 1975. Jeannie Morris was the first woman to report live from the Super Bowl in 1975.
