The Oglesby City Council had a half hour discussion this week before putting a $975,000 property tax levy on file. City Commissioner Jason Curran feels the city has a surplus and doesn’t need to raise the levy from the $929,000 received this year.

The increase is driven by a desire to fund the police pensions more. Curran doesn’t have a problem with that, but he argued against the tax increase with Finance Commissioner Thomas Argubright.

Curran says he’s no fan of property taxes going up year after year. He’d rather the city rely on sales taxes and other revenue sources that are tied to the economy so they go down when the economy sinks.
