City of Oglesby social media posts will soon have to meet certain criteria. The City Council is adopting a new policy determining the kinds of things that will be posted on the city’s Facebook account. It will also block comments on posts.

Mayor Dominic Rivara says something unexpectedly turned out to be controversial a while back. A request to post something about baseball tryouts generated more controversy than the city wants to deal with.

Commissioner Jason Curran says with the new policy, the city won’t have to constantly police its social media pages for inappropriate comments, incorrect statements, and questions that need answers. He’d rather deal with people directly when they have problems or concerns.

Commissioner Carrie Lijewski said at Monday night’s City Council meeting, she believes the changes will be okay if people can still privately message the police department when it goes online asking for public responses to things. And people can still call the department by telephone.
