Ottawa City Council members may look at the city’s first food truck regulations Tuesday night. They listened to the public in a workshop meeting yesterday. Some people are all for food trucks bringing a variety of food not currently available in the city’s restaurants. But some restaurant owners who invest in permanent buildings think a mobile restaurant that can pack up and go is unfair competition.

City Council members heard from people who believe the food trucks are good for business because customers go to bars and other businesses after eating. They also heard from restaurant owners who don’t want food trucks showing up for a few hours during the most profitable times, drawing their customers away, and then leaving.

Jared and Sadie Murley of Ottawa own the Bertha’s food truck. They say they’ve sold food from it in Ottawa eight times and it’s currently the only one operating in the city. Food truck regulations could limit where and when they operate. The city could also charge registration fees.
