Yesterday Jordan Luplow hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as the Indians defeated the White Sox 3-2 in Cleveland. Lucas Giolito struck out 11 over six innings while giving up two runs for Chicago. Gio Gonzalez took the loss for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. The South-siders have fallen a half-game behind the Twins for first place in the AL Central. The Sox continue the series with the Indians in Cleveland with Dallas Keuchel taking the mound. The Pirates held on to edge the Cubs 2-1 in Pittsburgh. Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth, but took the tough loss. The playoff-bound Cubs wrap up the series this afternoon.
The Royals rout the Cardinals 12-3 in Kansas City. Harrison Bader drove in a pair for St. Louis, which dropped two of three in the series. The Cards host the Brewers tonight.
The Chicago Bears are mourning the passing of legendary running back Gale Sayers. The player known as the “Kansas Comet” died yesterday at the age of 77 after battling dementia for years. Sayers was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 at age 34 and remains the youngest person to have received the honor.
