Last Night on 1430 WCMY Luis Robert tied the game with a home run in the seventh and then won the game with a run scoring ground-rule double in the ninth as White Sox rallied to beat the Twins 8-5 at Target Field.  The Sox have won 12 out of 14 and sit on top of the American League Central at 22-and-13. The series resumes tonight with Dallas Keuchel on the mound. 

The Sox Ace Lucas Giolito is the American League Player of the Week.  after throwing the first no-hitter of the 2020 season last week, striking out 13 Pirates hitters. This is the second straight week that a White Sox player has won AL Player of the Week, with José Abreu winning last week. 

 

The Cubs were busy before yesterday’s Trade Deadline by acquiring left-handed relievers Josh Osich  from the Red Sox and Andrew Chafin from DiamondBacks. The North Siders also landed outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Tigers.

 Cubs visit the Pirates tonight with  Jon Lester  getting the start. Chicago is first in the NL Central at 20-and-14, three games ahead of the second place Cardinals. 

 

Speaking of the Cards, Paul DeJong hit a grand slam in the fourth as the Cardinals held off the Reds for a 7-5 win in Cincinnati. St. Louis has won two straight.   

 

The Sky cruised to a 100-77 win over the Indiana Fever in the WNBA.

 

The U.S. Open is underway at Flushing Meadows.  Monday marked first-round play with Sixteenth-seeded John Isner losing  to fellow American Steve Johnson.  Today, both Serena and Venus Williams are in action.  Serena is again seeking her 24th career Grand Slam singles title.

  

 

Local Sports.

The Lady Pirate earned their first win of the season in golf yesterday against Plano 193-197.

  • Zoe Harris and Hannah Duggan led the Pirates, each scoring 44 in the contest.

 

The Seneca Lady Irish lost at home  to Dwight 208 – 265.

  •   Laura Yegge led The lady Irish with a score of 53.

 

The Newark/Serena boys golf team lost on the road  to Dwight 192-196. 

  • Cam Figgins led all golfers  with a very nice 38. 

 

The LPO Swim team lost  90 – 44  against the home team of Normal West.

  • Peyton Heagy won the 50 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, and 100 Breaststroke.
  • Nicole Pocivasek placed second in the 500 Freestyle.
