The Cubs were crushed by the Tigers 7-1 in Detroit.  Chicago’s lone run came on a solo shot by Willson Contreras in the top of the 9th.  Tyler Chatwood was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs in less than two innings. The series concludes tonight with Jon Lester taking the mound against Detroit’s Michael Fulmer. 

 

 The Royals rallied to beat the Cardinals 5-4 at Busch Stadium.  Tommy Edman smacked a two-run double and Paul DeJong drove in a run for St. Louis.  The series wraps up tonight with Dakota Hudson facing KC’s Jakob Junis.

 

The Fire dominated with a 3-0 win over Cincinnati in their long-awaited return to Soldier Field.  Chicago will hit the road to take on New York City at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

 

The Chicago Sky fell to the New York Liberty 101-99 in the WNBA. The Sky dropped to 10-and-5. 

 

Serena Williams had a three-set loss to No. 13 seed Maria Sakkari at the Western & Southern Open in New York.

 

Phil Mickelson shot a 7-under par in the second round of his PGA Tour Champions debut. Mickelson is using the event at Ozarks National to continue his prep for the U.S. Open after he was eliminated from the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs last weekend. 

 

Arizona Wildcats coaching legend Lute Olson is in hospice care and “in the fight of his life,” according to the Arizona Daily Star. The 85-year-old has long battled health issues, including a minor stroke in February 2019 that hospitalized him. Olson coached at Arizona for 24 seasons and  guided the Wildcats to 23 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, 11 conference titles, four Final Fours and the 1997 national championship.
