Mornings in school, afternoons online–Ottawa Elementary approves back-to-school plan

Unable to feed children in the cafeterias with enough distance between them under pandemic rules, the Ottawa Elementary School District is going for half-day in-school sessions in the new school year. Supt. Cleve Threadgill explained the plan to the school board Tuesday night.

Students will be there in class in the morning and go home for remote learning in the afternoon. Parents who want to keep their children home for remote learning all day will get that option.

As if there aren’t enough logistical challenges, school board member Mark Fisher pointed out that entire classes could be kept at home if someone’s exposed to the coronavirus.

Kids who go to school will have to wear masks. Supt. Threadgill says that’s not optional. It’s not in the school district’s power to change the rule either.

School Board member Stephen Omolecki would have liked a back-to-school plan in which students do a lot more learning from home.

But the rest of the school board voted for half-days in school in the morning and remote learning from home in the afternoon.
