Morris Republican St. Rep. David Welter says Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan should resign. He says the charges that ComEd bribed Madigan associates for help passing legislation beneficial to the company show the Speaker himself doesn’t have the ethical standing to hold the position.

Welter doesn’t think it’s likely Democratic House members will tell Madigan to resign. The Speaker has a lot of influence over who gets campaign support and whose bills get onto the House floor. While ComEd is agreeing to a fine for bribery, Madigan isn’t charged.

As for what should happen to ComEd, Welter says he knows a lot of good people with the company. He’d want punishment to focus on the individuals responsible and not on the rest of its employees, its vendors, or its customers. The company is a big part of the economy in the 75th Illinois House district.
