Levee project nearly paid for

The city of Marseilles is almost done paying for the sewer plant levee improvement project. The city council paid about $4,000 to the engineering firm it used and $100,000 to the contractor Wednesday.

Mayor Jim Hollenbeck says the city has actually saved money with the engineering firm.

The city was on the hook for about $400,000 of the project. The rest of the $1.7-million cost came from a FEMA grant.

The project raised the levee around the treatment plant on Commercial Street and upgraded some pumps. It was prone to flooding and had to be sandbagged regularly.
