Peru Mayor Scott Harl lashed out at social media stories on the city’s property taxes at last night’s city council meeting. Social media posts claim the city is using the downtown TIF district to raise taxes. Harl says if a resident’s tax bill went up, it’s because the value of the home increased. Harl also mentioned that the TIF district has nothing to do with tax increases:

The city does not levy a property tax for city operations due to its large sales tax revenues.
