A tractor trailer truck went off Interstate 80 and crashed all the way through the Peru Antique Mall building Monday morning. The antiques business closed a few months ago. The building is addressed on May Rd. and is between May Rd. and the Interstate.
The building is between uses right now. That’s good for Chuck Mercier of Spring Valley. The space he rented until a few months ago was right where the truck went through. He believes he and his wife would have been killed had they been there when the crash happened.
Bob Grivetti is a partner in a machinery parts warehouse that was supposed to move in soon. He also feels lucky not to have been in there yet.
Another business has also been working on moving in. It’s a heavy equipment attachment business.
Peru Fire Chief Jeff King says the truck driver had a bad coughing spell and passed out. No one was seriously hurt. But on the way from the eastbound lanes, across the westbound lanes, and into the antiques mall building, the truck clipped a car. The car driver wasn’t hurt. King says the driver was shaken up though.

A tractor trailer truck going off the Interstate made a big wreck of the Peru Antique Mall.

Antiques dealer Chuck Mercier says the truck went through right where he rented space for his wares.

The crash made this hole on the building’s west side. Near the center of the photo is the back of the trailer all the way on the other side of the building.
