There’s plenty of livestock, but not enough open meatpacking facilities to process it into what you buy at grocery stores. The shortage could also lead to rising prices for meat items that are normally commonplace. OSF Clinical Dietician Katie Kaufman says there are ways to make due with less meat in certain meals and make food healthier at the same time.
Some meat substitutes that provide protean are beans, eggs, nuts, and cheese. Beans are also a good replacement for iron lost from eating less meat. Quinoa is a grain you can find at grocery stores.
Kaufman says most people can go two or three days without meat and might even experience some healthy weight loss.
