Court case delays continue for less urgent cases

Most local court cases continue to be delayed because of the pandemic. Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan says non-emergency civil court appearances, small claims, adoptions, civil jury trials, chancery, and probate are being postponed at least into June. So are traffic and misdemeanor cases.

But bigger and more urgent matters are still going on. When someone is in jail, that case is going on. Felony hearings, juvenile detention hearings, Grundy County mental health and drug court, and orders of protection are among the cases still to be heard.

If you have court and are sick, you are advised to talk to your attorney about a delay. Your court appearance won’t be required if you have been out of the country in the last 21 days, have been diagnosed with corona virus or are close to someone who has, or have other flu-like symptoms. But you need to contact your lawyer or the court system to talk about the situation.
